"Ode to an Ancestor"

To think

you dreamed me

here,

into this day

I wish to suck

through a straw.

May my words

smooth

the wrinkled sheet

of your back,

webbed

in lash.

This humming

I've known:

it's the dead

easing me forth,

oars combing

mist.

Dreamer:

how to thank you

from the bottom

of my poems?

To imagine all words

as neologisms:

once, their

clumsy flowerings

on the tongue.

Has your heart

ever skipped

a night--the morning

blue and too suddenly

there?

This hum is

the engine

of the world

started without me.

- 12th Annual Southern Fried Regional Team Slam Champion. Black on Black Rhyme Poet since 2002.

Samantha is a recent graduate of the University of Virginia and an eternal Back Talker of the Black on Black Rhyme persuasion.

She just completed her Masters Degree (MFA) in Poetry and is now currently touring the Southeastern United States in her illegally tinted car, the black bullet, selling CD's in poetry venues and public bathrooms.

Samantha is also the slam coach of the Virginia Rhodes slam team, the dynamic group that recently took home $3,000 worth of prize money at Southern Fried Regionals in Miami, where 16 teams competed for the grand prize, bragging rights, and good old fashioned camraderie.

Some of Samantha's favorite things to do is laying upside down on her bed reading, talking and laughing with friends and fellow poets, drinking Thai Iced Tea, making love and making poems, and of course, sculpting her Afro into sundry zoo animals.

You can check out Samantha's July itinerary below. To learn more about Samantha and read all her business, you can visit her website at www.samanthaspeaks.com.
