"Regress to Radiance"

I am a child of God,
the God I glorify through poems
that audiences glorify through applause
once thought of as a lost cause
and the effect
is a spirit depressed
compressed beneath the weight of the flesh
that wars with it constantly
honestly I’d never been to the crossroads before
except for
the train tracks that guide Norfolk Southern
through Southside Virginia
while listening to Bone Thugs-n-Harmony
check out my melody
so close to a felony
that my heart had steel bars
and a 235lbs. guard
with bloodshot eyes
that looked just like mine
demanding that I
lay down and die
at the feet of my demons
that came forth screaming
in the form of whirlwinds
spinning through my living room
hues switch in
identical order of the horsemen
of the Apocalypse
in my living room
I had a Revelation
Lion of the tribe
of Judah wherever I
reside
Lamb’s Garment draped over my right side
as the Spirit call eye
from darkness to sight
just to show me where I came from
and I ain’t cum from no orgasm
I came through an orgasm
From Creator consciousness riding
a bolt of lightning
down the tree of life
just to bite a quince
at the surface this
allegory may make no sense
like the Magi’s gift
of gold, myrrh, and frankincense
my fragrance of choice
to Jesus of Nazareth
but your souls feel me
speaking the speech of healing
forming phonetic pictures
of the parables from scripture
that our magnetic fields
may grow less niggas
and more gods
fertilizing wombs
with proverbs and psalms
since my genesis

I’ve sought to make an exodus
through levitical precepts
into numbers
since my nativity
I’ve sought to make an excursion
through godly practices
into numbers
since my birth
I’ve sought to take a journey
through the word

into numbers

like cuneiform and Hebrew
through the word
into numbers
like 13
a righteous number
of righteous men
with righteous aims
not saying I’m perfect
but I write just the same as
Moses and James
Malachi and Jude
John, Luke
Mark and Matthew
this is my gospel
prophet, apostle
if that’s why I’m sent
but only in death do we seal testaments
KRS-ONE asked me
what am I willing to die for?
after a little pondering Kris
my answer is this
I am a man of God
The God I glorify through poems
that audiences glorify through applause
now known to be a found cause
and the effect

is

- 12th Annual Southern Fried Regional Individual Slam Champion.
This spoken word artist/ emcee from Norfolk, VA began writing rhymes shortly after his 20th birthday in September of 1996. Marquis L. Mix aka 13 of Nazareth nervously stepped before an audience of about eight people for the very first time at Soul Café in Tropical Delights in Virginia Beach, VA and has since performed at a series of clubs, cafes, theatres, and colleges up and down the east coast.

From Springfield, Massachussetts to Miami, FL the voice of 13 has moved the spirits of audiences with love, compassion, fear, pain, clever wordplay and undeniable truth as he knows spoken from depths of his very soul.

His work ranges from the use of beautiful abstract imagery in the conveyance of universal concepts to the very concrete sometimes painful and horrific aspects of our history and our now.

13’s seemingly effortless writing ability has garnered an immense level of respect among his peers in this modern spoken word movement.

"Fallout Shelter: an epileptic’s epic" - debut solo spoken word/hip hop LP released March 2004 on Spiritainment Recordings.

The famed question though has nothing to do with 13’s accomplishments and everything to do with his name. People always ask where the name 13 originated. Well, in short his grandmother gave birth to his mother at the young and tender age of 13. His mother gave birth to him on the 13th day of September and ironically gave him a name with; yep you guessed it, 13 letters. Subsequently and just as poetic both his mother and grandmother both passed on when he was just 13 years old. Marquis Lee Mix will and has told anyone who inquires “I did not choose 13, 13 choose me.
